Wort breaks club record on international debut

ALEX Wort made his English international debut in the decathlon at Stoke over the weekend and claimed a creditable eighth place.

The Warrington Athletics Club star ended day one in third place after coming first in three of the five events.

He clocked 12.23 seconds to finish first in the 100m before claiming a long jump personal best and another first place finish with a 6m leap.

He followed that with two more personal bests in the shot putt and high jump and he ended a successful day with another first placed finish in the 400m, leaving him with a total of 2,883.

Wort started day two with an excellent win in the hurdles and then went on to produce two throws over his personal best in the discus, the best being 31m 14cm.

A hand injury prevented him from achieving a height in the pole vault but he bounced back to produce the second best under 17s javelin throw of 39.88m.

He ran a solid 1500m in 4mins 51.54secs to round off an impressive England debut.

Despite his pole vault failure affecting his score, Wort managed a creditable octathlon score of 4,568 – an improvement of 154 points and a club record.
